Climate Change & Natural Resources

Introduction

Montana’s natural resources are the priceless treasures of the Treasure State. Our forests, rivers, and lakes contribute quality to life in an otherwise harsh landscape. Our native plants and animals further endear us to this place on the world map.

As Montanans, we are rightfully concerned that climatic changes will lessen our historic accesses to these resources. Parents and grandparents worry that we may pass along something less than what we have known.

This section of the Climate Change in Montana website examines three broad categories of natural resources: Forests, Water, and Wildlife. The Montana Climate Change Action Plan recommends actions for the state’s forestry resources. Water, while not specifically addressed by the plan, is seen by many as the earliest barometer of a changing climate in Montana. Certain lesser-known species of wildlife are also seen as sensitive indicators of emerging changes in Montana’s climate.
