Major Facility Siting Program

Wind Hunter:

Project Description , Scoping Letter , Application , Project Map , Environmental Assessment June 2006  Letter withdrawing application-March 2007

Several state and federal agencies are cooperating on the environmental review of this project. They include the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for the 230kV transmission line, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation for the portions of the wind farm and transmission lines located on state school trust lands, the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for portions of the wind farm and transmission lines located on federal lands, the Western Area Power Administration (http://www.wapa.gov/corpsrvs/envpnp.htm ) for transmission lines crossing lands enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program and the Wetland Reserve Program.  On March 14, 2007 DEQ received a letter from Wind Hunter formally withdrawing their application for approval of the 230kV transmission line.  Instead they propose to construct a 69kV line which is not regulated by DEQ.

BLM has recently released a programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for wind farm development on lands it administers in the west. The EIS may be viewed at http://www.windeis.anl.gov.
