Junk Mail

Did you know that US residents receive some 4 million tons of junk mail annually and roughly half of it is never opened? Unwanted junk mail does far more than create a nuisance.

  • Junk mail wastes natural resources.  One hundred million trees and 28 billion gallons of water are used annually in the production of junk mail.
  • Junk mail wastes money.  $870 million is spent yearly for transportation and disposal of unsolicited mail.

Reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. While it may be impossible to completely eliminate junk mail, these simple steps will significantly reduce the amount of junk mail reaching your door:

  • Write or contact the Direct Marketing Association and request that your name be removed from their mailing list. You may wish to be placed on their "Do not call" list as well.

  • Sign up now for www.catalogchoice.org and choose WHICH catalogs you wish to receive, and which ones you wish to stop.
  • ONE CALL will remove your name from the four major credit bureaus: Equifax, Trans Union, Experian and Innovis. Dial 1-888-5 OPT OUT (or 1-888-567-8688) 24 hours a day, and ask to be removed from all mailing lists.
  • If you register for prizes, sweepstakes, or giveaways, check the “opt out” box so your name will not be included on any lists. Request, in writing, that your name be removed from mailing lists at this major sweepstakes mailer:
