According to MT Underground Storage Tank Rules, "a person may not install, close, or inspect an underground storage tank system unless that individual has a valid license issued by the department."

UST Licensing
The department licenses individuals as Installer/Removers, Corrosion Protection Installers, External Leak Detection Installers, Liners, Removers, Compliance Inspectors, State Inspectors, and Oversight Compliance Inspectors. Underground Storage Tank License Application Materials
You will need Adobe 5.0 or higher to use these online input forms properly. The forms below can be filled out on-line, then printed, signed, notarized and sent to the DEQ.

To become a licensed Installer/Remover, an individual must:
- Submit a completed application to the Department of Environmental Quality showing that the individual has actively participated in at least three UST system installations and two underground storage tank closures. For requirements specific to Corrosion Protection, External Leak Detection, and Liner installation licenses contact the department.
- Submit a permit review fee of $100
- Submit three references attesting to the individual’s participation in UST installations and closures
- Pass a written exam with 80% or better.
To become a licensed Remover, an individual must:
- Submit a completed application to the Department of Environmental Quality showing that the individual has actively participated in at least three underground storage tank closures. Submit a permit review fee of $100
- Submit three references attesting to the individual’s participation in UST closures
- Pass a written exam with 80% or better.
Continuing Education Training
To maintain a current UST license, a licensee must meet the continuing education units (CEU) outlined in the following table prior to the expiration of their 3-year license period. Half of the required CEUs must be from a department-approved refresher course. The refresher courses are held spring and fall every year.
