Background... Paul was born and raised in Helena, Montana. He was a diesel mechanic for a few years, and then went to the University of New Mexico in Civil Engineering. He graduated from Montana State University.
Time at the DEQ... He has worked at the DEQ since 1991.
Why the DEQ... Paul says that he liked the people here and the laid-back atmosphere. He also wanted to stay in Montana. Paul says, "I love the outdoors and I love Montana. I like working with protecting the environment.
Job duties... He provides technical assistance in the area of wastewater treatment, which involves educating engineers and the public in structures and design of treatment plants. He says, "I get to work with all kinds of people - large companies to individuals. I review the technical documents on construction projects. I review the designs (blueprints) of wastewater plants. Currently I am working on 12 projects."
Typical day... Paul says that a typical day usually consists of reviewing specifications. Although he deals with a small number of projects, they may go on for two to four years. He does get out in the field a little.
Qualities needed for the job... Paul says that in his job he has to be able to prioritize projects and be very organized. Some of the challenges with this job are dealing with the technical decisions that become controversial. He says, "That could all be resolved by educating the community. Being familiar with the industry helps me to offer them the correct options."
Job satisfaction... Paul says that he likes the people he works with. He says, "It's a very professional atmosphere. I like the public service sector. It's a "work-together" atmosphere. The program I'm in does a lot of good for the environment."
