Remediation Division

WHAT'S NEW?
DEQ Remediation Division recently reorganized two of its sections into bureaus in an attempt to improve administrative efficiency and streamline operations. The Federal Superfund and Abandoned Mine Lands Sections are now the Federal Superfund and Abandoned Mines Bureaus. The Mine Waste Bureau, which was comprised of both of those former sections, no longer exists.
The Remediation Division is responsible for:
- Overseeing investigation and cleanup activities at state and federal Superfund sites
- Reclaiming abandoned mine lands
- Implementing corrective actions at sites with leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs)
- Overseeing groundwater remediation at sites where agricultural and industrial chemical spills have caused groundwater contamination
The purpose of these activities is to:
- Protect human health and the environment
- Prevent exposure of human and ecological receptors to hazardous or deleterious substances released to:
- air
- groundwater
- soil
- sediment [or]
- surface water
- Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations
