Underground Storage Tank Installation, Modification or Removal
You Must Obtain a Permit Prior to Conducting any UST System Work, Including Installation, Modification, or Closure!
A permit is required from the department for the installation or closure of underground storage tanks. Installation of leak detection systems including wells or corrosion protection systems requires a permit. Modification, repair, or lining of an existing UST system also requires a permit. If you are uncertain whether the work you are going to be conducting at a UST facility needs a permit, Click here for a list of permitted work, email the UST Program, or call the Montana UST Program at (406) 444-5300.

Your licensed UST system installer or remover may assist you with obtaining the necessary permit, or you may begin the application process here.
All permits are subject to and must follow Montana specific Critical Installation Requirements. In addition, detailed information can be obtained in the How to Submit a Completed Permit Application document.
