Water & Wastewater Operator Certification Program

The Montana Water and Wastewater Operator Certification program has two missions:

  • To protect the public health and the environment by having certified operators in direct responsible charge of the operation of water treatment plants, water distribution systems, or wastewater treatment plants.

To provide testing, recording, program information services and to ensure that comprehensive, ongoing training is given to Montana's water and wastewater operator community.

The program currently supports approximately 1616 certified operators.

Certified operators and applicants are required to provide proof of citizenship or legal alien status. Read Legislative Referendum LR-121.

Operator CEC (Continuing Education Credit) totals for the current Biennium which began on June 1, 2012 and ends on May 31, 2014.

2012 Martha Anne Dow Excellence in Education for Environmental Science and Public Health Award

Dr. Martha Anne Dow was one of the founders of METC and the Director from 1988 to 1992. She was instrumental in the joint efforts put forth by MSU-Northern and the Montana DEQ to form METC. To this very day MSU-Northern and the Montana DEQ work together in support of METC and environmental and public health education.

In 2009, METC awarded its first Martha Anne Dow Excellence in Education for Environmental Science and Public Health at Fall Water School.

This year the METC Steering Committee selected Warren Jones to receive the 2012 Martha Anne Dow Excellence in Education for Environmental Science and Public Health award. Warren is currently Associate Professor for the Center for Biofilm Engineering, at MSU-Bozeman. Warren has been at MSU since 1986 conducting research and teaching in the environmental engineering field, focusing on biological processes in water, wastewater, and hazardous waste as well as supporting student activities such as the MSU Student chapter of Engineers Without Boarders.

Barbara Coffman, Director of METC, presented the Martha Anne Dow award to Warren Jones at the 79th Annual Fall Water School in Bozeman.

With the blessing of Dr. Dow’s family, this award is presented annually to a person who has provided education to those in the environmental science and public health fields in Montana as professionally, as earnestly and as sincerely as did Dr. Martha Anne Dow.

It is a privilege for the staff of METC, the DEQ Water/Wastewater Operator program and the METC Steering Committee to work with you Warren. We look forward to our continued work together.
